Abstract

This study is set to investigate how Mandarin speakers learn motion verbs in Russian and Czech, in particular the expressions of PATH. This study presents some basic differences of how to express PATH in Russian and Czech and also investigates the interference caused by learners’ L1, i.e. Mandarin, to their L2 learning. Language data used in this study is from NCCU Foreign Language Learner Corpus, which collects language data from Taiwanese students who study Russian and Czech at NCCU. The result of this study demonstrates how learners of different levels of proficiency express PATH, whereby we can observe a various degree of influence by their L1. This study hopes to benefit the preparation of related teaching materials for more effective L2 learning, and to bring further insight into the understanding of how to express motion events in Slavic languages.
